  • Government to link 200 more mandis to eNAM
  1. Union Government is going to link additional 200 wholesale mandis to online trading platform eNAM (electronic National Agriculture Market) this fiscal (2018-19) and also encourage inter-mandi transactions.
  2. At present, 585 regulated mandis in 14 states are linked with the eNAM. So far, 50 lakh farm these 14 states.
  3. Government is ensuring that all wholesale agri-mandis adopt online auction and gradually allow trading between mandis in state and eventually between mandis outside states, thereby setting up single national agriculture market for benefit of farmers
  • UNDP to set up skill development centre in Hyderabad
  1. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is going to set up skill development centre for clients of Bharosa, an integrated support centre for distressed women and children in Hyderabad, Telangana.
  2. This initiative is aimed at empowering vulnerable and marginalised women by imparting skills training
  • Indian Army finalises Rs. 15000 crore indigenous ammunition project
  1. Indian Army has finalised 15,000-crore indigenous ammunition project under which range of ammunition for its critical weapons and tanks will be produced indigenously.
  2. It is claimed to be biggest ever initiative for indigenisation of ammunition. It aims to overcome long delays in imports and address problem of dwindling stockpile
  • Environment Minister launches programme to train 5.5 lakh green skilled workers by 2021
  1. Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan launched Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) aimed to train over 5.5 lakh workers in environment and forest sectors.
  2. Under this programme 5.5 lakh individuals across India will be provided training in environment and forest sectors through 30 courses by 2021.
  3. Objective of GSDP is skilling the youth of India, especially dropouts and increasing the availability of skilled workforce.
  • International Children’s Film Festival Of Kerala 
  1. The first edition of the International Children’s Film Festival of Kerala is held in Thiruvananthapuram , Kerala.
  2. Screenings at the festival are organised by the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare, Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, Kerala State Film Development Corporation, and the State Institute of Children’s Literature.

  • Visit of Vice President to Guatemala, Panama and Peru
  1. Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu was on an official visit to Guatemala, Panama and Peru in Latin America from 6, 12 May, 2018.
  2. This was Mr. Naidu’s first official overseas visit. On this visit, Mr. Naidu was accompanied by a highlevel delegation including Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Shri Jasvantsinh Sumanbhai Bhabhor.
  • Nepal to host 2018 BIMSTEC summit
  1. Nepal is going to host 2018 Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) summit.
  2. It was announced by Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli during his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kathmandu (capital city )

  • Chinese State Run Bank Launches India Dedicated Investment Fund
  1. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) , a state run Chinese bank has launched ICBC Credit Suisse India Market Fund, China’s first India dedicated publicly offered investment fund.
  2. The fund will invest in exchange traded funds listed on more than 20 exchanges in Europe and the US that are based on the Indian market.
  3. ICBC is pitching this fund to investors stating that Indian market offers the best opportunity for Chinese investors due to the prospects of double digit 
  • WPI inflation jumps to 3.18% in April
  1. As per data released by the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation stood at 3.18 percent
  2. The rise can be attributed to increment in index of ‘Food Articles’ group which went up by 1.9 percent to 139.8 (provisional) from 137.2 (provisional) for the previous month.
  • DoT approves Bharti Airtel and Telenor India merger
  1. The Supreme Court had rejected DoT’s petition for security deposit of Rs 1,700 crore from the companies and ordered it to approve the merger.
  2. Airtel will obtain an additional 43.4 MHz spectrum in the 1800 MHz band. Telenor India operates in 7 circles: Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, UP (East), UP (West) and Assam.

  • India witnessed highest number of Internet shutdowns in 201718: UNESCO report
  1. According to the ‘Clampdowns and Courage South Asia Press Freedom Report 2017 -18’, released recently by the UNESCO, India alone accounted for 82 out of 97  instances of Internet shutdown among South Asian countries between May 2017 and April
  2. Internet shutdown is referred to as any intentional disruption of the broadband or mobile Internet or Internet based mobile apps, by an order of the authorities or threat of non state party, to control communication or online content or slowing down the access to the general public.
  3. In India, nearly half of the cases of Internet shutdown were experienced in Kashmir Valley. Over 10 instances of Internet being affected were witnessed in Rajasthan, while Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana were among states in which less than 10 cases of Internet shutdown were recorded.

  • Federer replaces Nadal as number one, Djokovic on the slide
  1. Roger Federer returned to the top spot despite of not having played since March 2018
  2. Rafael Nadal lost the No. 1 spot to Roger Federer due to surprise quarterfinal exit at the  Madrid Masters.
  3. Former world No. 1 Novak Djokovic slipped six places to 18th on account of secondround defeat in Madrid Masters. This is Djokovic’s lowest ranking since October 2006.
  • Kvitova up two places to 8th in WTA rankings
  1. zech Republic’s tennis player Petra Kvitova jumped two spots to eighth in the women’s singles tennis, WTA rankings published
  2. Petra Kvitova won the Madrid Open after beating Kiki Bertens.

  • Noted Lyricist, Poet, Politician Balkavi Bairagi Passes Away
  1. Noted Hindi film lyricist, Nandram Das Bairagi, popularly known as Balkavi Bairagi, passed away.
  2. Bairagi, a Lok Sabha member between 1984 and 1989 and also a former Rajya Sabha MP. He was 87. He wrote several Hindi poems, among which, "Jhar gaye paat, bisar gayi tehni" is considered a gem by many Hindi poets.
